Abstract

The paper discusses colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in LaMnO3 and related manganites. The substitution of La with alkaline earth metals changes the symmetry and crystal structure, inducing ferromagnetic interactions via a double-exchange mechanism. The paper reviews different exchange mechanisms (semi-covalent, ionic, and double-exchange), and considers the influence of doping concentration, Jahn-Teller effect, orbital ordering, and charge transport. Experimental results using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are also discussed, illustrating phenomena such as metal-insulator transitions and canted antiferromagnetism.
