Abstract

This paper explores the origin and evolution of imaginary numbers, highlighting their development from a misunderstood concept to a cornerstone of modern mathematics. The work reviews early contributions from Heron of Alexandria, Del Ferro, Cardano, Bombelli, and Euler, illustrating how mathematical necessity drove the adoption of imaginary and complex numbers. Through historical context, examples, and the concept of closure in mathematics, the article emphasizes the critical role imaginary numbers play in solving equations once deemed unsolvable.
